A World Apart

A World Apart: Women, Prison, and Life Behind Bars A World Apart: Women, Prison, and Life Behind Bars by Cristina Rathbone

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Surprisingly, I couldn't put this book down. I had picked it up to do some research for a project I'm thinking about starting and not only was it killer interesting but Rathbone's writing style is so seriously engaging that I caught myself wishing that I could write just like her. Her dedication to her work is inspiring and I'd read another of hers in a heart beat.

Tallbike Joust June/July 09!

For those of you who have never been to a bike joust- you are missing out. Lots of different cities have em' either officially or unofficially. Here in SLC we try to keep it moderately underground. A friend of ours organizes the bout and we all advertise in one way or another. Most recently posters were made (left). Everyone rides their bicycles to a pre-determined location to meet then we all ride together to a secret location that only the organizer knows about. We have had up to around 200 people at one event! This past event last friday wasn't quite as large but got a pretty good turn out all the same. Once at the secret location, everyone sets up and signs up then the jousting begins!! Usually there are a few tall bikes being used and a few different jousting poles made mostly of pvc pipe and with a punching glove at the end or even a stuffed animal. Yes I'm talking about riding double (sometimes triple) decker bikes toward each other with huge poles and the intention to knock your rival off of his/her bike. No joke!!! Usually, after one of these events, I've laughed and smiled so much that my face hurts the next morning.

Some photos from the tall bike joust we had in June

familiar faces and random graces

gangstaaaa! haha

We got a quick visit from John McClay (find him here)and a new friend Laura on their way out to LA June 5th. John is following a call to be an intern at a church out there and is on fire!! We all went to an art show at Captain Captain Studios, rode bikes around, went hiking/exporing, and John even got to visit the SLC Bike Collective. It was super refreshing hanging out with both of them and we hope to see them again soon!

mewithoutYou

I went to go see my favorite band, MewithoutYou play the other night. I haven't seen them live for over 2 years and the show was quite refreshing. It didn't match up with the shows of theirs I've seen in the past at Cornerstone, however, it was lovely. Check them out here: MewithoutYou.
