Sugar House and Park City January 23, 2007

So I've settled in (I FINALLY thrifted a dresser and have my clothes put away as of yesterday!) and have been becoming more familiar with my surrioundings here in Utah. I can't believe I've been out here for over a month. I have been loving every second of it.

My house-mate Jenee and I are ready to move another girl into the apartment. I've been on a search for a low-maintenance and chill gal to fill the roll of housemate number three. A third person here would DRASTICLY lower our rent and who wouldn't want that, right?

VERITAZ and the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COULTURE
My company, Veritaz Productions, has been lisenced in the State of Utah for a while now. I've gotten everything switched to be Utah-Local and have been really encouraged during the process. I was listening the other day to NPR on my drive to UPS to pick up a package and heard the "state of the city" address being given by the Mayer here. The Mayer of Salt Lake City is a man named Rocky Anderson. How appropriate, a man named Rocky is the Mayer of Salt Lake City, Utah- a city surrounded by the Rocky mountains. Here are a few encouraging parts of his speach (the full speach can be found at http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,650223541,00.html .

"Commercial activity, particularly that of local, independently owned businesses, is the lifeblood of our city. In bringing people from many walks of life together in common purpose, our places of work help forge bonds of reciprocity and mutual understanding between people who might not otherwise associate with one another."

"In collaboration with the Salt Lake Valley Health Department, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, Teen Advocates against Tobacco, and the City Council, we recently developed an ordinance to ban smoking in City parks and at mass gatherings. Because of our efforts, visitors to Salt Lake City parks, and participants at mass gatherings like the Utah Arts Festival, the Living Traditions Festival, and the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival need no longer fear exposure to dangerous secondhand smoke or going home with smelly clothes and hair from the smoke of others."

"To increase available parking for residents and visitors to our downtown, we added over two hundred fifty new center-of-the-street parking stalls to Broadway Boulevard and 300 East. We also introduced reverse-angle (back-in) parking on 200 South to provide for greater safety for cyclists. With the support of the Council, we continue to provide free parking during the holiday season at all City meters. As part of our Green Vehicle Program, alternative fuel and high-efficiency vehicles can now park for free for two hours at any City parking meter."

" After we added over fifteen miles of bike lanes in the past few years, I issued a complete streets executive order to ensure, to the extent possible, that all Salt Lake City streets are accessible to and safe for bicyclists, pedestrians, motorists, and people with disabilities. We also plan to incorporate safe, segregated bicycle lanes, which have been utilized so effectively in other cities, into our long-term transportation master plans. Segregated bike lanes will allow bicycling to become a safer, more convenient alternative to automotive transportation. The Transportation Division will incorporate these principles into the Downtown Transportation Master Plan, a key focus for 2007. We are moving forward, constantly, with real progress in providing for greater safety and access for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders."

All of these types of things just encourage me more.

SALT LAKE CITY BICYCLE COLLECTIVE
So I've been volunteering at this non-profit called the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective ( www.saltlakecitybicyclecollective.com). I try to go Mondays and Thursdays. When I'm there the kids who also volunteer there teach me everything you need to know about bicycles while we all maintain the shop. I'ts one of the coolest things ever and everyone should click the above link and find out what tit's all about. I've met a number of cool peeps there- including a kid named Inaccio (sp?) last night who is a speed skater relocated from Florida. No kidding!

I'm A PHOTOGRAPHER AT BRIGHTON SKI RESORT
Yea I gave in and got a job at one of the ski resorts here. Brighton isn't one of the most massive resorts but I've had a great time riding there. I got hired into STAR PHOTO at Brighton as part of a team of mountain photographers that do both action and posed shots outside on the slopes. I'm usually up the hill by 9am and outside in the snow shooting photos until 2pm. Afterwards I move inside to the shop and sell the stuff that we shot all day. It's actually pretty fun and the free snowboarding pass isn't bad either! Extra bonus? Now that I have a free pass I get free transportation on Trax here in SLC and free bus rides up the mountain to the ski resorts. No more paying for public transportation! woo!

Sooo that's kind of what I've been up to lately. Other than that I have been trying to gather myself and get to know my way around SLC and Park City. I'm actually writing this update while sitting in the Filmmaker's Lounge at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City. I'm waiting on a lecture about funding documentary films that I somehow got into for free. It starts in about an hour in a half. Right now people are just shmoozing around and talking to funders about their films. Too bad we don't have our stuff together for Veritaz. Next year will be a knock out for sure. As for right now, I'm trying to just take it slow and do things right. Prayers always help. I feel so small in this world of crazyness... at the same time, though, I feel like if I had my gear together I'd have no problem making some "friends" here. I'm so excited for the upcoming year! I'll reveal our plans in the near future for the company and what not. Right now, I'm just an observer... Woops time to go get a seat for the panel discussion I came up to the festiv al foe! More to come on Sundance later this week!
